Grade 7 Hands-on

 School Year 2024/25

Triangles project - Math - 2024/25

For this project students were tasked with making a creative display showcasing 6 different types of triangles. The triangles were classified either by angles or sides. Students were asked to be as creative as possible while displaying the relevant information. This project was a way to let the students show off their creativity while also reinforcing their knowledge about triangles. The 6 types of triangles students were asked to display were: acute triangle, obtuse triangle, right triangle, scalene triangle, isosceles triangle and equilateral triangle. Students were graded on their correctness, completeness and creativity.

Sleepy Hollow - English - 2024/25

In class this week students read chapter 4 of Sleepy Hollow. After they'd finished reading, students wrote and then performed a short play in which they were to try and guess how Ichabod and Katrina's first meeting would go. This was a fun and creative way for students to practice their inference skills.

Build an atom lab - Science - 2024/25

Interactive Build an Atom Lab - In Grade 7 Science, we are currently learning about the atom. In this lesson, students used an online interactive simulation to build atoms. The simulation allows students to click and drag protons, neutrons and electrons to help them understand their charge and mass. Students worked together in pairs whilst completing a worksheet where they had to build different ions and isotopes.

Submarine Squad - Math - 2024/25

For this activity, students played a Kahoot game called Submarine Squad. Students must all work together as a team to answer as many questions correctly as possible. The game's object is to escape the sea monster chasing their submarine. Once they successfully escape the sea monster the students must then identify one of the diagrams that is on one of the other student’s devices. If they are successful they move on to the next round. This game is a good way to incorporate teamwork and collaboration while also reviewing the topic. The topic that the students were reviewing was Operations with Integers. This unit consists of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers.

Grammar Race - English - 2024/25

This week, the Grade 7 students and Mr Jake, explored the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. We learned that countable nouns can be counted (e.g., "apple" or "car"), while uncountable nouns cannot be easily quantified (e.g., "water" or "music"). To reinforce this concept, we played a game where the class was divided into two groups. Each group received 20 words and raced to categorize them correctly as either countable or uncountable. The first group to finish accurately won. This engaging activity helped students apply their knowledge in a fun, competitive way, enhancing their understanding of the lesson.

Gold foil experiment - Science - 2024/25

The amazing St. Joseph Convent School students brought the world of the very small to life today by recreating Rutherford's gold foil experiment! We used a hula hoop as the atom, a ball as the nucleus, and ping pong balls as positive alpha particles.

Just like in the real experiment, most of the ping pong balls bounced harmlessly off our "atom" while a few went in unexpected directions! This reflects how Rutherford discovered that most of the atom is actually empty space, with a tiny, dense nucleus at the centre.

Hands-on activities like this are a fantastic way to make science engaging and relevant for students. They get to see scientific concepts come to life in a fun way, solidifying their understanding of the material.

Ping Pong Pick Up - Science - 2024/25

In this lab, students worked in groups to make a device that could pick up a ping pong ball and bring it back across the start line. They followed the design process that engineers use to construct their devices.

Groups started by brainstorming ideas and sketching their ideas on paper. Each group built their device using paper, tape, paper clips and string. Once they had a prototype, they could practice picking up a ping pong ball and make adjustments as needed.

Each group then went head to head to see who could pick up a ping pong ball from the furthest distance. This lab helped the students to apply the different steps in the design process so they could appreciate the importance of making a prototype, testing and redesigning it.

Atomic Structure Lab - Science - 2024/25

Thrilled with the creativity and understanding of my fantastic Grade 7 scientists at St. Joseph Convent School showcased in our Atomic Structure Lab!

These budding researchers used clay and toothpicks to craft incredible models of atoms, highlighting the protons, neutrons, and electrons. Their presentations were clear and engaging, demonstrating a solid grasp of this fundamental concept.

So proud of their hard work and enthusiasm for science! Keep up the fantastic exploration, everyone!

Welcome back to school - 2024/25

The Grade 7 Teachers are happy to be back at school and ready to kick off another action-packed school year. We're all excited to build great working relationships with our students.
