Sustainable Fashion

Semester 1

2022/23

Sustainable Fashion Overview

The theme for semester one PBL was Sustainable Fashion. The growing issues surrounding fast fashion and its impact on the world, both environmentally and economically, are still unfolding around us. Students were tasked with researching fast fashion vs sustainable fashion to gain valuable knowledge of how this industry can directly affect our future. They then choose a focus area where they feel they could offer and create a positive solution.

We recognise that the future of the environment and fairness in the economy relies upon the next generation of leaders & innovators taking action. This project is designed to expand student's knowledge & to consider the footprint they are leaving, by encouraging them to conduct their research and discovery.  It is also intended to develop 21st-century skills that these young scholars will take forward into their future education and careers.

Research

  • What is the difference between fast fashion and sustainable fashion?

  • What impact does fashion have on the economy and the environment?

  • What steps are already being taken to move towards a more sustainable future?

  • What further action could be taken?

Planning

  • In groups, students will be asked to brainstorm business ideas that could support a more sustainable and circular fashion industry. Ideas could range from upcycling, repurposing, customising, creating a swap culture or any other solution they may find.

Designing and Developing

  • This is the part where the students can get creative. In this section of the project, students will be asked to design and produce an artefact, this could be a physical product or an online business, but will support the goal of driving sustainable fashion.

To celebrate the end of the PBL project, students put on a fashion show to display the garments and accessories they had created. The fashion show was a lot of fun and the students really put so much effort into this project.

Testing and evaluation

  • Students will carry out peer reviews and other research to gain feedback on their ideas. Further market research should be completed at this stage to ensure there is a need in the market for the product and to ensure it is both a sustainable and competitive offering.

Branding  â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • At this stage, students will get creative with their branding and marketing. The use of social media is encouraged and students can produce mock-ups of marketing they would use in their campaign.

Presentations â€‹

  • At the end of each PBL project, students present their findings alongside their final artefact. Students will be encouraged to display all the materials and assignments they have produced throughout the project.
